India

india3"As you help me, I get the opportunity to attend school, learn and read a lot. Now I am trying very hard. I know not how to thank you for the help which you are giving to me." says Kavita, age 7, sponsored child.

Fazilat and her family live in a one-room, makeshift home in the slum community of Mumbai. Family struggles with diabetes, unemployment, illiteracy and extreme poverty forced Fazilat to drop out of school. Her parents were desperate to give their children a chance for a better future through education – one of the only ways out of the intense poverty – so they approached the Family Service Center (FSC) in Mumbai for help.

WHFC ‘s India Child Sponsorship Program costs $150 per year, and partners with FSC to help Fazilat and other impoverished families by:

  • purchasing school supplies, uniforms, and paying the tuition required for children to attend school
  • providing counseling to improve the overall quality of life for families of sponsored children

Sponsors receive their child's profile, photograph and annual greeting card.

Many children have already completed the sponsorship program, and have gone on to find well-paying jobs in India's growing middle class.
